Projects

This page contains projects that have arisen from the initial UK Centre for Tobacco and Alcohol Studies (UKCTAS) funding that led to the development of the STAPM platform. The projects listed are only those that have a major component that has informed, used or been informed by the STAPM data and code.

The Sheffield Tobacco and Alcohol Policy Modelling initiative is an extension of the alcohol policy modelling work conducted by the Sheffield Alcohol Research Group (SARG). For a full list of SARG projects see https://sarg-sheffield.ac.uk/research-projects/.

The projects on this page are listed in three categories that differ in the nature of their objectives: (1) Large, multipart research programmes, (2) Research projects, (3) Knowledge exchange projects.

Projects are listed with the newest first in each section. Click on the links below to go to a page that has more information on each project. Each project page briefly describes why the project is important, its objectives, methods and outputs, with links to support the reproducibility of the work.

Large, multipart research programmes

The programmes of work continue to be instrumental in creating the conditions for the development of the STAPM modelling platform and for its use to improve commissioning in a public health policy context.

  • Targeting multiple levels of “the smoking cessation system” using novel scientific approaches. Cancer Research UK programme grant led by University College London with a team at the University of Sheffield developing the agent-based models. Elements of the STAPM modelling are contributing to the development of the new agent-based model of smoking cessation, which adds detailed explanatory components of smoking behaviour.

  • The SPECTRUM Consortium: Shaping Public Health Policies To Reduce Inequalities and Harm. Multi-university, multi-agency research consortium focused on the commercial determinants of health and health inequalities funded by the UK Prevention Research Partnership. The SPECTRUM consortium supported the extension of the STAPM modelling from England to Scotland and Wales, the development of new economic outcomes, and new policy analyses.

  • UK Centre for Tobacco and Alcohol Studies (UKCTAS). Network of 13 universities funded by the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, the Economic and Social Research Council, the Medical Research Council and the National Institute of Health Research, under the auspices of the UK Clinical Research Collaboration. The STAPM modelling platform was founded on modelling for England conducted with UKCTAS funding.
