The data and code in the STAPM platform can be used to construct different types of models, i.e. the STAPM platform is not a single model in itself. Each type of model that can be built using the STAPM platform is designed for the purpose of getting outcomes for different types of modelling project.
This section lists the main models built on the STAPM platform. The webpages for each model include a brief description and links to further information.
The design of the STAPM platform means that models can share functional components, e.g. the joint tobacco and alcohol TAX-sim model uses and builds upon the model mechanisms in the Sheffield Tobacco Policy Model (STPM) and the new version of the Sheffield Alcohol Policy Model (SAPM-R). The description of the TAX-sim model therefore does not include detailed explanations of the model mechanisms for simulating the dynamics of tobacco and alcohol consumption, which are described separately for the STPM and SAPM-R models. Links to the relevant explanations are provided within the documentation of all models.
The Sheffield Tobacco Policy Model (STPM). Describing the development and current version of the individual-based population microsimulation model of trends in tobacco consumption and the effects of tobacco policies and interventions on the dynamics of smoking.
The Sheffield Alcohol Policy Model in R (SAPM-R). Developed based on the Visual Basic code for the Sheffield Alcohol Policy Model. Extensions added to model the individual life-course trajectories of alcohol consumption and health, and the effects of policy interventions. This created a new version of the Sheffield Alcohol Policy Model that builds on SAPM version 4.
Tobacco and Alcohol Tax and Price Intervention Simulation Model (TAX-sim). Developed as part of the SYNTAX project for joint appraisal of tobacco and alcohol tax interventions for harm reduction in the UK.
Each model should be referred to and acknowledged as in this example:
“The SAPM-R model is built upon the Sheffield Tobacco and Alcohol Modelling (STAPM) platform (https://stapm.gitlab.io/), a coherent set of data, code and documentation designed to inform approaches to reducing the harm from tobacco and alcohol, with the aim of improving commissioning in a public health policy context.”
Funding acknowledgement should also include text based on the following:
“Development of the STAPM platform was initially funded by the UK Centre for Tobacco and Alcohol Studies, UKCTAS (MR/K023195/1). Funding for UKCTAS was from the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, the Economic and Social Research Council, the Medical Research Council and the National Institute of Health Research, under the auspices of the UK Clinical Research Collaboration.
Subsequent model development has been supported by SPECTRUM, a UK Prevention Research Partnership Consortium (MR/S037519/1), which is funded by the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Chief Scientist Office of the Scottish Government Health and Social Care Directorates, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, Economic and Social Research Council, Health and Social Care Research and Development Division (Welsh Government), Medical Research Council, National Institute for Health Research, Natural Environment Research Council, Public Health Agency (Northern Ireland), The Health Foundation and Wellcome.
The funders have no role in model development or the preparation of model documentation or outputs from modelling work. The views expressed in model documentation and outputs from the modelling work are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the organisations mentioned above. The STAPM platform and documentation is not linked to the tobacco or alcohol industries and was developed without industry funding or influence.”
Where the development of a particular model has been supported by other sources of funding, this support should also be acknowledged as directed by the funder.
